Steeped in history, Ohaeawai (historically called Taiamai) is situated at the junction of State Highways 1 & 12, on what is locally known as 'The Crossroads'.
Just as in times past, this apparently sleepy Village is still a major stop for locals and visitors alike.
Still a dominant feature of the area today, the historic Ohaeawai Hotel is a favourite gathering place for locals, residents from nearby settlements and visitors alike. You will often find the friendly, well known characters of the area engaged in a good old fashioned chin wag, a game of pool , or maybe just contemplating the day.
The Ohaeawai Community has a keen interest in sporting competition, fielding championship winning men's rugby. There are also 18 hole and 9 hole golf courses very close by, so it's not surprising that many Ohaeawai folk enjoy this pastime.
Whether you're passing through or staying a while longer, Ohaeawai is interesting in the present day as well as in its history.
Centrally situated on the intersection of State Highway One and Twelve, the township of Ohaeawai makes an excellent base for exploring the Bay of Islands, Keri Keri, Pahia, Russell, Hokianga Harbour, Kaitaia, Whangarei and Cape Reinga.
